A Guide To Buying A Laptop for Students
I was at a friend of mine’s booth at a trade show recently and as she was setting up her roller banners she asked be about what she should look for when purchasing a laptop for her son who was going to university. Here’s the short version of what I told her.
It is tough to do without a computer these days. We use it for surfing, taking notes, chatting, connect to people, playing music, watching movies and much more. So, it is but obvious that students too need a laptop to get going and finish their assignments.
Internet Access – Many of the universities today have Wi-Fi campuses so that students can be online all throughout the day. This helps them to access the internet whenever they need. So your laptop must have a built in Wi-Fi port.
Battery Life – Most of the students are not at home most of the time. They may or may not find a socket for charging their laptop. Thus students need a laptop that has a good battery life.
Hard Drive – Although a standard 160 GB hard disk should suffice for a student, those fond of movies and music would do better to go for a laptop that has a bigger hard drive.
RAM Size – Bigger RAM means faster processing. Some operating systems work well even with 1GB of RAM, but others like Vista or Win 7 would need at least 2GB.
Processor – The choice of a processor would depend on the type of work would do. AMD and Intel are the best in the business. Also go for a processor with speeds on less than 2 GHz.
Weight – It is natural that as you need to carry it with you, the lighter it is the better.
Cost – You need to do some market research here and see which of the brands is offering the best features without any compromise on quality. </S
